THE NEXT DAY IS SUNDAY, and I shower, throw up a few times, and get ready for church. I’m on time for Sunday School, but I skip my normal class with other Singles like me, and I settle for the auditorium class, which caters generally to the older folks. I choose seating near the restrooms, you know, just in case.

While I’m concerned with what my fellow Christians will say (and think) about my pregnancy outside the bonds of matrimony, I’m more worried about what my parents, grandparents, and brothers will say. I know Mom, Dad, Mamaw, and Pa will be disappointed, but I know they will still love me and their soon-to-be grandchild. My brothers probably can’t care less, except that they’ll probably go all cavemen on me and want to pound Cruz’s head in because he’s defiled their older sister.

I have my phone on silent, but, as I’m using my Bible app to keep up with the class, I still see the texts as they come in.

I’ve had time to think about it.

Nothing’s changed.

I still love you.

I want to be your husband.

I’m happy about the baby.

By the time I read the last text, I’m tearing up. Before I can find my pack of tissues in my purse, someone slides in next to me and hands me his handkerchief. Through my watery haze, I see Cruz, looking as devastating as ever. What’s he doing here? He rarely came with me when we were together, a point of contention with my parents.

“I wanted you to take plenty of time. To really be sure,” I whisper, as I dab at my eyes with the handkerchief.

Cruz whispers back, “I am really, really sure. No doubts. About anything. Plus, I already told my family about you and the baby last night after everybody left.”

“You did? I haven’t told mine yet.” I feel myself starting to sweat with nerves again.

“Well, I’ll be with you. Plus, I want to ask your dad for your hand.”

“Oh, he’ll give it to you, after he threatens to kill you for knocking me up.”

Cruz pales a little, but rallies and takes my hand in his, lacing our fingers together.

“What did your parents say?” I ask.

“They weren’t thrilled that we weren’t married, but they’re happy about the baby.”

“What about your sister?”

“I told her that unless she got some help, she wasn’t allowed anywhere near the baby. Oh, and if she ever touched you again, I was calling the cops.”

I’m completely shocked. In the past, Cruz defended her. “Really?”

“Yeah. I know something’s wrong with her, but she’s out of control.”

“Oh.”

We quit our whispering, and focus on the rest of the class. When it’s over, the doors to the foyer open, and people stream inside.

I leave Cruz to go to the restroom, for non-throwing up activities, where I stand in line and chat with Patti’s mom as we wait our turns.

After I wash my hands, I greet people as I head back to the auditorium. Cruz is where I left him, but my
